Batman: The Dark Knight

I went to see The Dark Knight Friday at 12:01 am, one of the first showings on the west coast, theoreotically the first showing since they should all have started at the same time or later. Anyway, it was definitely worth going to see it at midnight on a work day.

The action in this movie was really good. There was so much going on to keep me entertained. I love stuff blowing up and chases and fighting scenes and there was a plethora of that and then some.

The plotline for the most part was followable and well written. There were some major jumps that left you in the dark but didn’t take you away from the story. I mean jumps in that you just had to assume some things like Harvey Dent’s background. They make references to it in some places but at the end pretend like you know a lot more then what the movie gives you. Another part towards the end we see Rachel in a warehouse and are left wondering “how did she get there?” and just have to think “oh well, she’s there now, let’s move on”. But for the most part, the story is coherent and very intriguing.

The toys Batman gets to play with are kind of cool and a lot are reasonable in terms of them being able to acutally be produced today. The thing with the cell phones is like something I talked about before on here but on steroids. Almost plausible but not entirely.

One thing I didn’t understand was the new Bat suit. Ok so its got shooting things now and is supposed to be stronger and lighter, but is more vulnerable to knifes and guns? All so he could turn his head? What kind of trade off is that? Especially against a guy who loves knives? Did I miss something there?

Anyway, I would recommend anyone who is able to watch movies, to go and see this. There are some parts that may scare you and if you are squeamish, they may downright give you nightmares, but for everyone else, it is a thrilling movie that delivers on the hype that was built up for the movie.

As a side, sadder not, those of you out there who were/are Heath Ledger fans, you should really go see this. Having seen most, if not all, of his movies (including Brokeback Mountain), I must say, this is, by far, his best performance. In fact, it is one of the best performances from any actor. I have seen a lot of movies so that is no small statement from me. It was that good. I totally believed he was the Joker and now whenever I think of the Joker, I will remember that performace. Sorry Jack Nicholson, but Heath Ledger is the Joker now. I was saddened by Heath’s death even more now after seeing this movie because I know there will not be an encore to this great performance.
